Taylor-ed to Shine in Cambridge A-Level Examinations
13 Taylorians Awarded Cambridge Brilliance Award 2007

Seven students from Taylor’s University College broke existing records by emerging as top achievers in the world in seven of the international A Level subjects, while five other students were placed as Malaysia’s top scoring candidates.

The world-class Taylorians were recognised for their achievements at the annual ‘Brilliance in Malaysia’ awards ceremony held at Armada Hotel recently. Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) Deputy Director Nick Sansome and Regional Representative, Mr. Ng Kim Huat joined the students, parents and staff of Malaysia’s leading colleges at the event to celebrate the achievements of students who have achieved Top in the World and Top in Malaysia ranking in their subjects or have performed best across a collection of subjects.

Mr Nick Sansome said “Taylor’s is an outstanding university college which produces outstanding results year after year. Taylor’s students possess the ability to think and solve problems which is highly sought after by universities the world over. While academic performance is important, most universities also look out for well rounded students who excel both academically and in extra curricular activities.”

Mr Ng Kim Huat added, “These awards have been held over the last five years and students from Taylor’s University College have done consistently well and won the majority of the awards every year.”

With the largest independent centre of excellence for the Cambridge A Level Programme (CAL) in the world, Taylor’s University College is certainly no stranger to producing high achievers and stellar results in the international A Levels examination.

Joshua Tan Hoong Yu, Lee Tim Weng and Yeoh Su-Ann were the top achievers in the recent A Level examinations. Joshua Tan stole the limelight as he claimed top in the world spots for Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. Lim Tim Weng was placed top in the world in Further Mathematics, while Yeoh Su-Ann was the best in the world in Mathematics.

The four other students were named top scorers in Malaysia in the examinations: Tay Por Hai for Law, Cheok Li Peng for Literature in English, Lai Chea Meng for Psychology and Marcus Lee Sheng Yang for Sociology respectively.

As the icing on the cake, Joshua Tan Hoong Yu was placed as Malaysia’s top scoring candidate in best of three A Level subjects combined, followed by Lee Tim Weng in second place and Jerome Wong Wing Sung in third place.

Joshua, 18, who intends to pursue a career in Biotechnology in Australia, enjoys travelling extensively. “My family makes it a point to travel and we have so far visited many countries which in a way has shaped me.” He continued to express his love for his family and the important role his parents play in his life. “My parents’ guidance and moral support has allowed me to explore my full potential and drives me to give my best in wherever challenge I face,” said Joshua.

"I have come to appreciate the fact that Taylors goes the extra mile to ensure that its students are in the best position to excel not just in the A Level examination but also in life. If I had to do A Levels all over again, Taylors would get my vote, hands down," added the cheerful lad.

Joshua was represented by his grandfather, Mr. Ng Goon Seng during the award ceremony as he and his family were away for holidays in the United States.

In addition, four students also scored top marks worldwide for their International AS Level examinations. Tong Hui Qin outshone candidates all over the world by emerging as the best for Accounting. Meanwhile, Chong Huey Yi, Justin Liew Turk Phin and Loo Juo Nan shared the top spot in Mathematics. Ang Xing Xian is placed top in Malaysia in Physics.

Mrs. Mary Ng, Programme Director for Taylor’s Cambridge A Level programme, was ecstatic with the students’ performance. “Given our track record of being the top centre of excellence for the Cambridge A Level programme over the years, I had confidence that our students would perform exceptionally well.I have no doubt that we will repeat such successes as we continue to help students excel academically and prepare them for their tertiary studies.”

Unable to suppress her happiness, she then added, “This is encouraging news for our students and our teachers. All of them have worked extremely hard and their efforts have certainly paid off.”
