Hands-on Laotian experience an eye-opener for Taylor’s students in more ways than one

Theres nothing to beat actual hands-on experiences when it comes to learning and 40 students from Taylors University College did just that in a business field trip to Lao P.D.R. (formerly known as Laos) from March 29 to April 1, 2008. The University of the West of England (UWE) Business Trip Lao 2008 was certainly an eye opener for the students from UWE, Diploma in Business (DIB), Taylors Business Foundation (TBF) as well as the American Degree Transfer Program (ADP).

“This was one of the best trips I have ever participated in,” said Vincent Ho Eng Yeow, a final year Bachelor of Accounting and Finance student with the UWE programme. “Thewarmth and hospitality of the Laotian people was simply amazing. The whole trip was a soul searching process and made me realise not to take things for granted and to appreciate every little thing in life. The daily reflections we had each morning helped me evaluate my daily actions and objectives and stay focused. I am planning to take six months off upon graduation to do volunteer work with either United Nations or Green Peace so I can contribute back to society.”

Adnan Teh Abdullah, a 2nd year ADP student majoring in Business was really touched by the handicapped children at the center they visited. “I realised they did not ask to be born that way, and they too deserve a chance to lead a normal life. Instead of me helping them, I discovered that they in fact made me re-assess my life and priorities. They were mostly very cheerful and comfortable in our presence, and seemed to approach each day with enthusiasm. Prior to coming to Lao, I expected them to be more reserved and quiet, nothing like their vivacious and fun-loving selves. Some of them could even run faster than us during the games. They are truly lovely.”

Organised by the UWE programme at Taylors, the business field trip was part of the students development activities to expose them to the real-world of business and creating business opportunities during their visit to a business organisation.

Programme Director of the UWE Programme, Ms Vinitha Guptan shared, “The sole objective of the business trip is to bring the theoretical concepts studies in the classrooms to practical viability. Through this, our graduates will be able to bring learning to the workplace as they have exercised the business ropes and also thoroughly experienced a holistic education system.”
