Korean Student Excels Despite Challenges

Although Korean native Shin Suzy had to deal with moving away from home and her loved ones, adapting to life in a foreign land and recuperating from an illness for several weeks, she still managed to finish at the top of her class in the first semester of the Taylor’s College Diploma in Quantity Surveying programme.

What’s the secret of this 19-year-old’s success?

“I couldn’t have done it without the support of my classmates and lecturers, especially when I was in the hospital. They took care of me and gave me notes on what I had missed in class,” she explained.

But Suzy’s success is also due to her own efforts and hard work. She pays attention in class, completes her assignments and spends about three hours a day on revisions during the weekdays. Her weekends, however, are saved for fun, rest and relaxation.

Despite missing her homeland and her parents, Suzy, who arrived in Malaysia in July 2007, said she’s glad to be studying at Taylor’s College.

“I’m gaining a very good education and enjoying my course of study especially the parts that involve Mathematics and calculations. Furthermore, I’m able to improve my English language skills, learn some Malay and Mandarin and make many new friends from different nationalities.”

When she graduates in 2010, Suzy has her sights set on obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Quantity Surveying and becoming a respected registered quantity surveyor in Korea.
