A total of 192 graduates from the 51st batch of the International Canadian Pre-University (ICPU) programme at Taylor’s University College stood tall and proud as they received their scrolls on stage today in the presence of the Senior Trade Commissioner of the Canadian High Commission, Mr Tracy Reynolds.

One student, however, stood out from the rest due to her unusual story of courage and determination. Despite graduating from the Korea University in her homeland with a degree in Business Administration and landing a coveted job in an international company, Korean lass Lee Mi Ju gave it all up to come to Malaysia to pursue her dreams of being a doctor.

“I left Korea in hopes of giving myself a new lease of life in my career path. Though it was my parents’ choice, I did not enjoy my office-bound job, much preferring the option of going into medicine and hopefully, in the field of reconstructive surgery.

“After much deliberation, I came to the conclusion to give my all to get into medicine instead of staying in a job of her parents’ choice that I did not like. There is so much more that I could offer to society as a doctor than being a corporate worker,” she recalled.

Mi Ju’s sacrifice paid off and she won the Chairman’s Award as the overall top scoring candidate as well as top scoring candidate in Science and Business. Mi Ju scored 96% in her overall result, 95% and 99% in Science and Business subject respectively..

Other award recipients at the graduation ceremony were Chian May Yen who shared the Chairman Award with Mi Ju, and Sybil Loo See Yan, Er Ka Peng, Chiam May Yen and Ng Qihan who were presented with the English, Mathematics, Social Sciences and Computer Studies awards respectively. A quarter of the graduating class were also conferred with the Proficiency Award, for scoring an average of 80% and above.

According to Mi Ju, she managed to convince her parents to finance her studies in Malaysia after she convincingly illustrated to them the lower costs and living expenses here compared to Canada or England. Seeing how keen and persistent she was to pursue her dreams of becoming a medical practitioner, her parents finally relented.

Although starting all over at the age of 28 when many would have had a steadfast foothold in their careers is hard to fathom for an Asian, Mi Ju managed to overcome all that by being focused on her goal to be a doctor.

“I think being a mature student works out better than I thought as I was able to be more focused compared to my peers. Also, during team assignments, my classmates showed me more respect when I was delegating work. They complained that it was difficult to work with me because I’m so demanding, but fun nevertheless,” she laughed.

Mi Ju then added, “It’s important to set a goal. A lot of people don’t have a goal like which school they’d want to go to so they don’t have a proper aim. A lot of students don’t work hard from the start of the course as there’s no end nor beginning in ICPU. Everything is important. You’ve to work hard from the start to make sure your scores are consistent. I’d say being consistent is the key to doing well in ICPU. So is teamwork. When you work well together in a team, everyone wins.”

Mi Ju intends to enrol into International Medical University (IMU) after graduation and complete her education in one of its partner universities. Her top choice right now is the University of Southampton, one of the most established medical schools in the UK.

She added, “I am so glad that I chose to do ICPU instead of the traditional A Level route as it came highly recommended by my friends who have studied at Taylor’s. Since I came from a non-science background, the option to do ICPU was extremely attractive because I can keep up with the science subjects required to enrol into medicine. The fact that many universities recognise ICPU as an A Level equivalent into medicine made this an ideal option. On top of this, I’ve learnt so much more than I expected. It’s a good mix of knowledge and social skills as we have to do a lot of individual and team presentations.”

Taylors President, Mr Ooi Chee Kok commented, ”We’re proud to share such a joyous occasion with our graduates who have proven their mettle not only to themselves, but to their parents and lecturers. This is a moment to be shared amongst the people who have stood by these students to give them invaluable advice and support. We are here not to celebrate a simple graduation, but a rite of passage for all the fine individuals here today who will move on to the next stage in their lives, be it university or into their first jobs. Taylor’s is proud to be part of it and will continue steadfast in our commitment to education excellence.”

The ICPU programme is especially tailored from the latest North American education concept, which focuses on interactive teaching that prepares students for tertiary education. The programme is especially catered to equip students with skills necessary to thrive in university and in their future careers. With a team of highly-qualified lecturers from Canada and Malaysia, students are able to immerse in a fusion of East-West where they can truly understand what it is, to be part of a global educational experience.
