On Sunday, April 20th, HELP University College held its 20th Convocation atone of the leading hotels in KL. Graced by Her Excellency Penny Williams the Australian High Commissioner, this years 20th convocation marks a significant milestone in HELPs history as the very first batch of students will graduate with a HELP University College degree since its upgrade to University College status.

Also present at the ceremony were many distinguished members of the academia from Australia, United Kingdom and the United States such as the London School of Economics and Political Science, Charles Sturt University, University of Queensland, University of East London, University of East London, Bemidji University, and University of Upper Iowa, amongst others. Approximately 800 graduands who received their pre-university, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees were present at the Convocation Ceremony held at Shangri-la Hotel. Of the 800 graduands, 187 were international graduands from 23 countries. The largest nationalities represented were Chinese, Indonesians and Maldivians.

The ceremony began with an academic procession led by top student Loh Jun-Yi who who carried the HELP mace, a symbol of growth and ennoblement of the institution and the incorporation of former practices with new traditions.

Loh Jun Yi, a University of London First Class Bachelor of Science (Hons) Accounting and Finance graduate is the recipient of the Tan Sri Datuk Paduka Dr Hajjah Saleha Outstanding Award for her excellent academic achievements.

Jun Yi who is currently attached to Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia Berhad is a recipient of many awards and scholarships. Last year she was awarded the 2007 KPMG Award for overall top achievement in the University of London BSc (Hons) Accounting and Finance. Also bestowed with the HELP Scholarship Awards in 2005 and 2006, Jun Yi maintained a balance of academic and co-curriculum achievements as the President of the Accounting Club, under the helm of the Department of Economics from 2006 to 2007.

“Today is an extremely joyous occasion for my family and I. To be lauded for my efforts by my alma mater is a testament that my philosophy of perseverance and self-motivation has indeed paid off. I can’t thank my family and lecturers enough for their dedication and efforts with me. HELP not only paved a platform for my academic excellence but has also made my career hunt a lot easier with the career guidance they provide to the students”, said Jun Yi.

HELP University College was also presented with a framed image of the 1858 University Charter (please see attachment) as part of the University of Londons 150th Anniversary by Mrs Rosemary Gosling, Director, External Programme at the London School of Economics and Political Science this weekend. The presentation of such an award was confined to a limited number of institutions that, in the view of the University of London, have made an exceptional contribution to the success of the External System and the support of its success and students. HELP University College was the first educational institution in the world to offer the University of London External Programme outside of the United Kingdom.

HELP Univeristy College also awards the Pyramid Award presented to students who have contributed in terms of extra curricular activities, excellent leadership and organizational skills. This year the award wasreceived by Wong Xiao Qing with a Bachelor of Science (Psychology) with magna cum laude from Bemidji State University, United States of America.
Tang Woan Koon, a hearing impaired graduand also received her Bachelor of Information Technology from Charles Sturt University, Australia. Miss Tang not only successfully completed her degree, but was also the recipient of the HELP CEO Scholarship Award.
In her speech to the graduands, YBhg Tan Sri Datuk Paduka Dr Hajjah Saleha said the success of HELP’s educational philosophy and pedagogy, from teaching to the syllabuses and courses of our distinguished partner universities, and to the establishment of our own programs, bears the hallmark of excellence and quality.

“It has been a long journey for us, albeit a short one in the history of the making of a great institution. Weve seen HELP rise from small and humble beginnings to become one of the largest and most successful private educational institutions in the region. It is with pride that I pay tribute to everyone; our students, parents, management and staff, partner universities and the government for your contributions to the making of an education icon”.
She also reminded the graduands to hold fast onto their principles and values in life, and to be humble at all times.
